Finally found that Spam Tocino

I had been looking for Spam Tocino for quite sometime now, after I saw a photo of it go viral on the internet. I couldn’t find it in my favorite grocery, Rustan’s in the Alphaland building behind Ayala Columns. It says on the can that this is a “Limited Edition” variant, but I was happy to have found it in Waltermart, Chino Roces.

A friend of mine (Imee, haha) was wondering why I’d spend money on a nitrate and sugar filled meat, especially knowing how health conscious I can get. Well…part of it was curiosity.

The other part was this nostalgic Monty Python video. The only reason I’d indulge in Spam once in a while.

Anyway, I normally eat either the low sodium or the turkey variant since these are not too salty. I’m not into tocino because I don’t really like pork all that much but I used to enjoy the viand when I was a kid. Unlike the regular Spam variants, this one requires you to use water, just enough to immerse the slices in. Once the water level goes down and the slices start to caramelize, you can start searing both sides.

I think I put too much water (250mL) but I think it turned out ok. Not too sweet, with just a hint of saltiness.

The verdict? It almost tastes like tocino, except it’s friendlier to your teeth. For some people, it can be an acquired taste. Since I’ve already satiated my curiosity, I suppose it’s time to go back to my favorite variants: less sodium and turkey.

Just a bit of warning for the health conscious — but curious — people out there: even the less sodium variant has about 580mg of sodium in it. That’s still a lot of sodium, considering our recommended daily sodium intake should be around 1300-1500mg. Eat moderately.

Di ba this one isn't salty? I find that cooking it in water makes the texture a bit mushy though.

Honga eh. The boyfriend finds the texture weird. But since I have no difficulty chewing it, I have no complaints. I think my mistake with the water still made it a bit like regular Spam.

Oo, hahaha! I guess it's only right that they made this “limited edition” because you'll only really try it for curiosity's sake but the prep time defeats the purpose of Spam. Kaya nga tayo nagsa-Spam eh para quick cooking (at pag tinatamad ako magluto), haha!
