Voice-acting for local animation: one of my secret joys

A couple of months ago, I received a call from Edith of Top Peg Animation, asking me back for dubbing. That was quite a shocker because the last time I had stepped foot in a recording studio was four years ago. I was still working at Level Up, Inc. then but I would become the voice of a cartoon character during my free time.

Imagine my excitement when they said that they were unearthing old episodes and re-dubbing many of the lost sound files. I may have become a different career person and student in the last four years, but voice-acting continues to break the monotony of my otherwise cloistered geek life. Some of my Sundays became lively again. I caught up with old friends and re-acquainted myself with the other voice actors whose names I had already forgotten (since I only used to see them during sessions). Um. Actually, most of them I know by their characters’ names, except the ones I’ve worked with in LU.

The only thing I worried about was the fact that my voice had gotten deeper. In fact, I had to tell them, “Uh, nagbinata na po kasi ang boses ko.”

The title of the animated series? It’s Jobert. It was based on the comic book series entitled Jobert at Iba Pang Super Pinoys. It’s supposed to be a sci-fi action-comedy. My character is Krystel, whose super powers are her cyber wings.

She’s supposed to be in love with the bishounen-type villain called Zem. Goodness knows how many times I’ve had to scream his name in various intonations and volumes.

Jobert was my first dubbing project. I had auditioned for Krystel’s voice out of sheer adventuring spirit, even though I thought it was going to be a daunting task. Well, it was…but I think I actually improved with every episode. As with other art forms I’ve dabbled in, I had learned a lot from this project. I’m happy to have been part of it because it’s proudly Philippine-made. I just hope it succeeds.

    The art and character designs look good. But…Jobert??? Can't he have a cooler name? 😀

    I know another person who does voice work and it's always interesting to hear her “professional voice”. What you left out is a audio snippet so we can hear!

    @Andy
    I was thinking the same thing! And this is English-dubbed. Thank goodness my character is in love with Zem and not Jobert. I had difficulty reverting back to my English sentences whenever my dialogue had his name in it. Imagine if I had to call it so many times.

    @TAO
    I don't have the snippets. 🙁 I wanted a video sample too.

    I used to read Jobert. But it suddenly stopped printing, and now, I wonder where they've gone to. xD! I even got a chance to talk with the creators of the comic. (I wonder if they remember me >D)

    Then, matagal ng nakaplan tong anime na to, I don't remember… Grade 3 ako nun.. uh.. 2002? (I still have the comics I think)

    And wow, I should watch this then Ms Bea. =3

    Surprising enough… this comic contains ecchi. XD!

    Hallo orange-no-kaze!
    Thank goodness hindi umabot samin ang ecchi. I was already shuddering at the number of times I've had to utter Zem's name and Zem's seiyuu is a bit on the naughty side (he's a good friend, though).

    We started dubbing in 2005 but my last session was 2006. We really have to release this because it's been in the oven for far too long that many other anime titles have already done what we're supposed to do first. There were scenes that were created earlier, but since other animated features got released before Jobert, it looks like we're the ones who copied from them. XD

    Yush, XD! Although kung walang ecchi mukhang tinanggal nila sa Animated series. Sa dinamidami ng oras na ntanggalan si Jessalaine ng damit, nako naman. xD! At buti naman you survived Ms Bea! XD!

    Oo nga, ang alam ko matagal ng nakaplan, di pa pala talaga narerelease lahat, Sayang naman. XD! Dapat mailabas na! XD!

    And Miss~ this is Chavez =3

    Yeah, I sorta guessed because of the orenji no namae. Kungsabagay, there were shots concentrating on my character's boobs and butt and the frog tried to trick Krystel into giving her a massage. XD
