Teeth

Teeth is a coming-of-age story…with a wicked twist. Whenever teenager Dawn gets assaulted by some hormonally challenged boy, her “super powers” — a set of dormant teeth hidden between her legs — start chomping. Cool!  I’m also quite happy to find out that feminist author Camille Paglia was one of the consultants for this movie.

This has got to be one of the most disturbing flicks I’ve ever seen, but I find it very hilarious.  Mainstream peeps don’t really know what to make of it, if the reviews over at Amazon.com could be believed. Some were expecting horror and were utterly disappointed because they ended up laughing. The others were just disgusted and made sweeping (and very uneducated) statements about feminists (without knowing that there are various feminist movements and theories that may or may not be in agreement with each other). In any case, I just find myself very much entertained by this little package.

The only downside I see here is that Dawn still has to experience…well, you know…so the teeth can have something to chew on. Yuck. Then again, reading many chauvinistic (and uneducated) comments in some review sites makes me think that some men deserve to experience being bitten by THAT kind of teeth.

Many people will not get it, which is why I concur with what Amazon.com editorial reviewer Kathleen C. Fennessy said: “Along the way, there’s satiric humor, squirm-inducing gore…Teeth is neither anti-male nor anti-female — as some detractors have claimed — but it’s definitely not for the squeamish or irony-impaired.” This is an art film, plain and simple. It obviously will not cater to Hollywood drenched palates and it’s not supposed to.

Would I recommend this to children? Not to anyone below 13 perhaps. I’d let my little brother watch this when his voice starts breaking so he’d know (figuratively) what happens to boys who disrespect women: You reap what you sow. Hehe.
