Solo Features Kenkoy
I’m actually tempted not to write anything so I can just gawk at the beautiful campaign photos Solo released for their Kenkoy feature. In fact, I’ve posted the press release (along with this blog’s contest details) on my Facebook page.
I know that maybe a lot of people don’t know Kenkoy — I mean, my maternal grandparents had yet to meet when it first came out — but I see this as an opportunity to reminisce about our artistic roots and culture during the American occupation. (Funny how the creative industries consider comics and animation to be such a “baby” when these forms of art had been around longer than most of our great grandparents.)
Kenkoy was the brainchild of the Father of Philippine Cartoons, Tony Velasquez, and its humor was very pop and meant to be a caricature of the Filipino. Kenkoy was probably the very first jejemon brought to life through visual art…
Which is why I was actually stunned when I saw how classy the ad campaign is.

(This might take a bit of research because even my parents weren’t born yet during the height of Kenkoy’s heydey. Hehe. But I’d be interested to see how resourceful everyone can be. =^.^=)

September 9, 2011 at 12:59 amI was in luck when I visited my friend’s apartment and discovered he had a Kenkoy comic strip. The comic strip was all about Kenkoy’s meeting with Manuel Roxas. Wearing their Katipunan uniforms, Kenkoy and his buddy presented themselves to General Roxas to inform him that they were New Katipunan members. He explained in his pidgin English that they paid one peso for their membership and they were prepared to die for their dear country. Manuel Roxas told him that the uniform was not a requirement and speaking English should be avoided because it was “pangit.” Kenkoy wittily retorted that if English was “pangit”, why was his membership receipt written in English?

the only Filipino comic that i used to follow was Death Machine(popularized in a Filipino TV as Asero), Falcon Tres, Lightning Roda, and Kumander Uzi. 🙂
i'm a sucker for sci fi, super hero stuff.

September 22, 2011 at 2:34 pmI do own a Kenkoy collection. Just a simple compilation in a short folder with fasteners. Due to the great Ondoy, which happened September 26 of 2009, all of it swam and soaked in mud. I do recall several short candid conversations from it that I also seeing while watching comedy shows using different set-up and modern scheme. Way back then, I knew that Sir Tony Velasquez will be famous and that collection will be timeless. Solo really brings back to reality his works and humor. *kudos*
