I’m at that stage where I’m rethinking my career path once again. If there’s one thing constant about me, it’s that I reinvent myself every two years. Unfortunately, I think I’ve been stuck for too long in the academe…too long means being a full-time administrator for about two years now.  I’ve nearly forgotten what it’s like to be a multimedia designer and I’ve been trying to get my groove back for the past couple of weeks.

Cris and I finally decided to put up the Sarimanok Design Team.  We’ve been working as a tandem — our skills complimenting each other — for about a year now. That’s two years AFTER she graduated.  She had her roots in Fine Arts. Me…I’ve been on the web for most of my career.  She was literally my student in the realm of Multimedia Arts, but I was her padawan when it came to traditional media.  The Sarimanok Design Team was inspired by another duo: http://www.thesixthirty.com.  That’s the design team of my sister Alex and her boyfriend Pao.

Anyway, we bought our domain, http://www.sarimanok.ph (no design yet), on May 27, 2010. That’s exactly one year from the moment of our design partnership. To commemorate this day, well…we knew it was going to be difficult because she’s based in Canada and I’m here in the Philippines.  We figured, the celebration is going to happen over Skype.

We decided to buy cakes and our choice of beverage. She got coke, her favorite, while I opened up the bottle of Welch’s Sparkling White Grape Juice Cocktail that I received as a principal sponsor’s gift at JC and Kat’s Wedding. (Long story how I became a principal sponsor at my age.)

The irony is that I do not like chocolate. I don’t know if I’ve stressed that enough in some of my posts.  But I bought Red Ribbon’s S’mores Chocolate Cake because she likes Red Ribbon and chocolate. The Red Ribbon site describes it thus: “Moist chocolate cake with layers of heavenly marshmallow and grahams. Topped with caramel and chocolate squares.”

Just looking at the dessert makes my teeth ache.  I was actually quite envious of the Orange Creme  cake (layers of white chiffon and light cream icing, both with a hint of orange flavoring and topped with kiwi, orange and pineapple slices) she bought from Transylvanian Traditions.  If this were an offline celebration, I would’ve eaten the orange cake and Cris would’ve dug into the chocolate cake.

I was wonderfully surprised at the S’mores cake, however, when I took a bite.  It was not overly sweet.  I loved the combination of marshmallows and caramel. The grahams (I’m not usually a fan) seemed to neutralize the chocolate. Yum!

I appreciated that it went well with the Welch’s juice cocktail.  I think I’m going to get addicted to these kinds of drinks. It doesn’t have alcohol and it doesn’t taste as cheap as your run-of-the-mill soda.  I suppose this could work in lieu of heavy liquor for those who are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. (I used to down bottles of Red Horse beer. Not very healthy.)

Oh, and she bought gerberas that sport the color of the sarimanok. Hehe.
