Trying Yoga for the first time (Pulse Yoga)

My friend Rowena told me about a free yoga session at Power Plant mall and I was the fortunate person to get hold of the last available slot. Hehe. This was for April 26, 2009.

I had always wanted to try yoga because my friend Barbs, who, incidentally, is on the National Team of wall climbers, said that yoga is good for cross-training with climbing.  I had tried wall climbing again that Wednesday and my body was still aching from it. (I suppose years of sedentary living does that to you when you’re suddenly exposed to brutal exercise.)

Our instructor was Tesa Celdran and it was supposed to be a “gentle” session.

I thought I was going to die. Hahahahahahaha!

Seriously, though, I didn’t think my body can stretch that much anymore. Although I had been a lot more flexible when I was younger, I seem to have lost that ability through the years.  Yoga is slooooow, but I couldn’t believe how much I perspired simply by concentrating on my breathing.

Rowena asked a lot about yoga being used for weight loss and I was under the impression that you lose weight slowly with yoga.  While I was more interested in increasing my strength and flexibility, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not needing to jump repeatedly into my pants the next day. My favorite jeans fit right quickly and I noticed that the mini-love handles, which I had developed over the past year, disappeared. That fast, as if my metabolism had gone back to the way it used to be.

Of course, the stretches (and the uncomfortable feeling of having my new bulges squeezed) may have something to do with it.  I also liked the fact that this exercise seems to instill discipline and patience. I definitely think I need more of it.  Now to find the time to do this on a regular basis…

Sweaty me, right smack in the middle of Animetric‘s photo. XD

Oh yeah…we were given tea afterwards. We were also given a free pair of Havaianas each. Rowena said that she thought I should sign up because I had always declared, “I’m not about to spend P800 on a pair of glorified chinelas.” And this was a chance for me to try them and see how absolutely wonderful they feel. I’d probably buy another pair, ones with higher heels. Hahahahahahaha!

I learned in Bikram Yoga last year that proper yoga breathing hastens one’s metabolism. 🙂

It’s possible, but the effect will wear off if you don’t do it regularly.

oh, incidentally, breathing properly is also important in wall climbing. kasi mas mabilis ka mapagod at maubusan ng strength if you don’t breathe properly.

I’m definitely appreciating yoga now. I also just started 2 weeks ago here in Ortigas and I couldn’t believe that I’m more calm now when it comes to work. And I’m learning to slow down. I think this will definitely help me in the long run. The first time I tried it, I told the instructor that my entire body felt like it was being awakened after sitting frozen in front of my PC for 9 whole hours from Monday to Friday.

that was HOW I FELT. well, in between parang mamamatay na ako during one of the positions. hahahaha!

where in ortigas? i live in pioneer, but i’m interested in signing up for classes in makati.

I thought Yoga Manila yung sa Rockwell. Anyway, for the time naman po, check niyo po yung site nila. Meron po silang ten-session pass na kayo pong bahala kung kelan kayo mag-yoga within two months. Mas mura nga lang siyempre kapag madalas. =)

i can only devote 4x a month to it if i got into it. i’m determined to train sa wall climbing na kasi on wednesdays or thursdays eh. and i can only fit so much into my time (what with PHD studies and work di ba).

Yeah, the breathing is really hard to maintain, especially since sanay tayong lahat sa improper way of beathing.

I really felt the pain (in a good way naman) when the instructor would circle the studio and adjust our poses to really maximize the stretch. Masakit na masarap for the muscles because I felt the blood was finally circulating properly. I never realized how mostly unused our entire body was until enrolling in yoga.

I enrolled at the Vinyasa Yoga Center, sa Emerald Avenue.

grabe no?

another thing about yoga: i will be forced to get a pedicure on a regular basis. hahahahahahaha!

miss, magkano po enrollment dyan?

parang gusto ko matry yang mga positions na yan…

ours kasi, was not totally about yoga, we combine it with kriya, and its a breathing exercise to balance out things and releasing toxics. good also, for asthmatic like me. =)

yoga kasi, is stretching diba? one of our teachers was denise celdran, i dont know if they’re related.

ang ganda ng effect ng kriya kasi lumabas lahat ng mga pangit sa katawan like sipon, stool (am i allowed to say that? haha XD). its very relaxing afterwards.

wala lang share…. =)

Hahaha! Ako naman I am forced to buy shirts for yoga. I’ve never found shirts that fit me well, so I always buy blouses. Ngayon I’m building a more casual wardrobe na, because sometimes from work I go straight to yoga. Haha.

Problem ko nga rin is time, because I edit a lot of journal articles so everyday there’s a deadline to beat. Minsan overtime ako the entire week. Buti na lang they have Saturday sessions.

BTW, the website add is http://vinyasayogacenter.com/vinyasawebsite/contact-us/. Medyo hindi updated yung site pero the landline is correct. May free trial sila Fridays and Saturdays if you want to try here.

4K yung monthly. naloka ako. mas mura ata kung walk-in kasi P500 per.

gusto ko talaga mailabas din lahat ng toxins sa katawan. one of the reasons why i wanted to take up yoga. kasi relaxation, plus di ba grabe maka-produce ng toxins ang stress?

san yan?

writing kasi eh. yung friend (classmate) ko na journalist din grabe ma-stress sa work. tapos na yung daily overtime sessions ko kasi summer break (although may summer classes pa ako) kaya sinasamantala ko yung oras. hahaha!

thanks for the link, btw. saturdays talaga gusto ko para relax after work (since my work ends at 3PM on saturdays).

Ah if you’re after flushing out toxins I recommend Bikram. You’ll sweat all the toxins away.

ay another thing i need to add:
the acid in my body was sort of neutralized after that one session, but it’s quickly coming back because APC is in the worst location (bad food everywhere during the summer). thank goodness i’m climbing again today, because i cannot stand feeling bloated and acidic at the same time.

mtcsmonti wrote on Apr 30, ’09
so what do you eat when you’re in apc? 😉

samin naman po 3500, for the part 1 session, 1 week po yung program. tapos its all up for you to continue the exercise at home. pero if you want to attend the exercise, its for free na kasi yung binayaran mo is like a membership fee, wherever there’s an art of living class, pde kang makisit-in. =)

i think they have sessions in shangrila hotel makati, and you will just say the “magic word” para malaman na member ka. hahaha

here in mandaluyong, i attend the session in my father’s office. member kasi silang lahat so, before magstart yung work nila, nayoyoga sila….

when it comes to food, they practice sharing, kaya kelangan magbaon ka, or magmumukha kang pulubing nanghihingi lang ng pagkain.

yun nga lang po walang libreng havainas. XD XD XD

balik vegan diet nanaman kami sa bahay because of that.

Two weeks lang ako sa yoga (and irregular pa at that; thinking of devoting Saturdays to yoga and then weekdays to writing my thesis. Will have to ask my boss for green light to not overtime for the next few months, pero mukha namang posible) and I notice I’m losing my taste for certain foods, like the canned/processed ones (gusto ko pa naman yung Maling and/or Spam) and even pork. Mas hinahanap ko soup, fish or veggies. And I’m not even a veggie person. Strange and amazing. Haha.

naku di ako puwedeng vegan. hahahahaha! i need protein.

ahh, matagal na akong hindi kumakain ng pork, since high school. minsan lang siguro pag napilitan kasi wala nang ibang makain pero mahirap ubusin kasi nakakasuka. i avoid red meat din as much as possible kasi nagkaka-problems ako with breaking them down.

pero interesting ha. talagang nawala sa panlasa mo without conscious effort. ako nawala sa panlasa ko kasi everytime i think about eating them, involuntary yung thought na masasaktan lang ako afterwards (parang pag drink ng matamis pag may sipon ako, instant sore throat). yung friend kong si barbs, hindi niya kaya ang amoy ng cooked meat, kahit white or red.
