Merced Bakeshop

The last time I tasted anything from Merced was 13 years ago, when my org mates brought some of their yummy brownies to one of our party-meetings. Yesterday, Cris had cravings and took me to their store in North Edsa. My very first visit to the actual bake shop. I was too shy to take photos of the interiors, which was really filled with childhood memories of traditional cakes and pastries. I’m happy they did not change anything. (Much like the Dayrit’s in Magallanes, which is relatively new but felt old.)

Anyway, here are photos of the pastries. If you feel like you’re looking at photos from the 70s-80s, well, the place not only looks that way but the natural lighting seems to agree that this area must remain in those decades.

Called Snowball, this is actually a vanilla cake wrapped in marshmallow frosting and topped with coconut shavings. It looked pretty so I bought it and didn’t realize that it had coconut shavings until Cris pointed it out. I am not into coconut, but I appreciated what it wrapped. The taste reminded me of those mini cake baskets surrounding wedding cakes back when I was a regular little flower girl.

Choco Nut Roll. It’s a small chocolate cake with choco-butter frosting and covered with nutty bits. The cake doesn’t taste like anything, which I think is good because the nuts seem to be its focal point.

Chicken empanada. Cris loves chicken empanada in any form. I like how this shell is crumbly like a croissant’s.

One of their bestsellers, the marble cake. It has an interesting texture to it, visually speaking. I haven’t seen marble cakes for quite some time now.

The marble cake’s packaging. This is actually a lot better than the old Merced packaging. Their trucks still sport the icky Comic Sans Serif typeface. I almost took a photo of them just to show that I am not kidding about the Comic Sans…

What can I say about Merced? Well, after being bombarded with highly commercial food products, their flavors are quite…simple. They’re not anything spectacular BUT I love the experience. I think it’s what we really came here for. I hope they never change because I am sure to come back for more.

I also want one of their marshmallow cakes for my birthday…

    love ko pastries ng merced bakeshop. eating pastries from merced reminds me of my growing up years. kaso layo lang talaga nya from our house. out of the way pa for commuters like me. 😀 next time madaan ka ulit. buy me and i will pay you. 😉
